This self portrait shows that the artist has undergone the male Samoan rite of passage of receiving a pe'a, a tattoo that normally extends from the waist to the knee. This photograph is part of a triptych series that was commissioned in 2012 by the Auckland Art Gallery, which was based on his first signature artwork: a triptych of his naked body created in 1995. This idea to revisit the original triptych and produce a corresponding triptych was aimed at continuing the conversation regarding cultural identity.
